Today I present a trailer analysis. And it's a trailer that I have been waiting for, for a very long time. Ever since set pictures started to be released (in fact ever since I heard filming had started) The trailer I will be looking at today is.... (well you can already see in the title can't you!)
Divergent!
Now I saw this trailer on Sunday during the VMA's, and if any of you follow me on Twitter then you know that my reaction wasn't quite on the scale of what it was when I saw the new Hunger Games: Catching Fire Trailer a while back.
Now have you watched the trailer? If not go watch it now before continuing on below!
Now you've watched the trailer let's dive right in!
WARNING SPOILERS AHEAD FOR THOSE WHO HAVE NOT READ THE BOOK!!
WARNING SPOILERS AHEAD FOR THOSE WHO HAVE NOT READ THE BOOK!!
1)Initial Reaction:
I'm going to be honest here, I have spent weeks searching Google everyday in the hopes that there would be some footage of Divergent released so when I heard that there was going to be some at the VMA's I got VERY!! excited. . . .
Only to feel extremely disappointed. I just sat blank faced through the whole thing. There was no excited squeal, no heaving breathing in shock I just didn't like it.

2)How Do I Feel Now:
I still don't like it, I still feel disappointed. Honestly I'm sat here hoping that once we get a full length trailer it will be much better than this I'm literally praying that it will.
Okay let's look at why I didn't like it shall we?
1st Jeanine at the Chosing Ceremony, I don't remember her getting up and making a whole speech about it. In fact I just went an consulted the book, and it's actually Marcus Eaton that does the speech! What the hell! Have they scrapped Marcus from the film? They better not have because how will Fours Fear Landscape work if they've scrapped his father's character!
2nd When I first saw Maggie Q had been cast as Tori I was okay with it, I wasn't against but now I am, I don't like the way she portrayed Tori (or rather what we saw of how she did) and I also hated the cheesy dialogue and breathy delivery. The whole "you're different, they call it Divergent you can't let them find out about you." really annoyed me, in the book Tori says " My conclusion is that you display equal aptitude for Abnegation, Dauntless and Erudite. People who get this result are called Divergent" much better dialogue if you ask me.
3rd The point everyone has made since casting was announced, Theo and Shailene do not fit how I pictured Four and Tris. I just don't like, and from the clips we saw of them together I felt nothing like there was no chemistry at all. And that really hurts because I love Tris and Four in the book, they're one of my favourite book couples!
4th I thought where the Abnegation lived was further out from the City, but it appeared to be right in the centre, which was odd to me.
Okay now onto the things I did like.
1st That Dauntless compound!! I wanted to see more but I loved what we got, it looks awesome :D
2nd The Ferris Wheel scene!! I'm so excited for that
and finally,
3rd At approximately 0:40 do I spy the scene were Tris is almost killed by Peter, Al and Co???? Oh please say it was!! And say that Four comes to her rescue ahhh that's probably the scene I'm most excited about, followed by Four's fear Landscape, I hope those two scenes are done well, because they are my favourite parts of the book!
3)When Is It Released: This film is due for release in March 2014. Sad times that it's still so far away! But that also means there is plenty more to look forward to like more pictures and trailers and lets not forget the release of the third and final book Allegiant in October!! Now that is definitely something I can't wait for, but you already knew that.
4)Would I See The Film Based On This Trailer Alone: This is always the tricky part. I'm trying to forget that I've read the book and will want to see it anyway, but also this was only a 1 minute long first trailer so I'm also trying to give it the benefit of the doubt. Honestly though, let's look at it as though this is the only footage we will get to see, and if it were then I would not go and see this because the trailer just wasn't that great in my opinion, almost as much of a let down as The Host trailer was and we all know how bad that film was (well maybe you liked it but I sure didn't).
5)Overall Score: I give this trailer, 4.5 or 5/10. I wanted so desperately to love it but it just left me feeling cold, hopefully we won't have to wait too long for a full length trailer so I can see whether this one just wasn't very well put together. It's in my top 5 favourite books so I would be very upset if the film really doesn't do the book justice.
That is all for today! As usual I hoped you enjoyed this post and I shall see you all on Friday!

I completely agree! Although, I wasn't too fond of Four/Tris in the book as a couple. The train jumping scene does look really well done, but the jumping into the dauntless compound doesn't, it looks like she fell.
ReplyDeleteI think they just want to big up Jeanine's part in the film because it's Kate Winslet, and they're probably trying to sell the film to a wider audience because of Kate Winslet.
