Today I present a trailer analysis. I haven't done one of these for a while so I thought it was a reasonable time to do another. The trailer I will be looking at today is.... (well you can already see in the title can't you!)
The Hunger Games : Catching Fire!
In my last trailer talk post it was more of an initial reaction versus how I felt shortly after watching the trailer. Now I saw this trailer on I think it was Saturday, and if any of you follow me on Twitter then you know how excited I got over it so needless to say it has taken a few days for me to calm down and actually analyse the trailer properly.
Now have you watched the trailer? If not go watch it now before continuing on below!
Now you've watched the trailer let's dive right in!
1)Initial Reaction: Do I need to post a picture of one of my tweets after I first watched it? Okay okay I will. Prepare yourself for a major fan-girl tweet. You have been warned!
Please excuse my language, I was very excited! So Initial reaction? Bordering on insane, I fell in love, after the first trailer showed so little about the second half of the book I wasn't sure how much they would show us this time around and I was just a little shocked by how much we got to see!
2)How Do I Feel Now: I'm still very excited. Okay I have one criticism. It's only a slight one but I feel it needs to be mentioned. About half an hour or maybe an hour after I first watched the trailer, I watched it again and realised that if I hadn't already read the book then I would be very confused and nowhere near as excited as someone who had read the book. I think this trailer is definitely the one that was released for the fans of the book.
For example Katniss' TV interview with Ceaser Flickerman. That white dress, yeah how would you know without reading the book or being told that, that was a wedding dress, designed by Cinna so that when she lifts her arms it burns and turns into a black mocking jay dress as a sign of the rebellion! I freaked out when I saw it, my parents who hadn't read the book, well they were rather indifferent. Do you see my point?
You will see in that tweet I put above that I specifically mentioned the arena, and it's a clip all of about 5 seconds long, to the unknowing eye it's just a jungle surrounded by water. To a fan of the books, it's an arena that runs like a clock, split it to segments, were different things happen in different segments every hour. Like Jabber-jays tricking you into thinking you loved ones are being murdered by trapping you and playing the sounds of their cries and screams over and over again, or perhaps the paralysing fog the can be deadly with prolonged exposure it atrophies the limbs and can only be 'purged' by the sea water. Now that was a small clip to get excited about if you ask me!
How cool did the training room look? I think it's fair to say that the budget for this film is significantly larger. That scene were Katniss is training and sends the arrow flying into the pixelated image, that looked pretty damn cool if you ask me.
Something I've never told you is that I love soundtracks, for me they can make or break a film. For example, many people have said that if you watch Drag Me To Hell with the sound off it isn't anywhere near as scary. Some of my favourite soundtracks are Tron Legacy, Titanic Prometheus, Avatar (same composer as Titanic) just to name a few and I thought the music under this trailer perfectly matched the sombre tone and feel of the trailer. So that was a massive thumbs up from me!
Oh it hurt to see the Gale and Katniss kiss, I wasn't looking forward to that in a similar way I never wanted to see the Jacob and Bella kiss, it was just wrong. I was team Peeta all the way! Especially when he said he can't go on acting for the camera's and ignoring each other in real life. My heart hurt for him, poor Peeta.
By the way in case it wasn't clear, for the 75th Hunger Games the tributes are chosen from the pool of surviving Victors. As District 12's only female Victor Katniss is guaranteed to go back in.
I may just go and watch this trailer again, and again.
3)When Is It Released: This film is due for release on November 22nd this year (slightly earlier in some countries and later in others however it will be released worldwide by the end of November)! It's been a long time coming but the excitement is ever so slightly starting to build up again for me. As to whether we will get another full length trailer I'm not entirely sure we will since we've now had 2.
4)Would I See The Film Based On This Trailer Alone: Tough question, I'll have to forget for a moment that I already love the book. Yes I would see this film based on this trailer, it showed more of the story and what will happen than the first trailer did. However given the aspects of it that only someone who read the book would understand the significance of I would still be a little hesitant as there were parts in the first film that I had to explain to my friends because they hadn't read the book and didn't know what was happening, for instance the 3 fingered salute, that wasn't really explained in the film.
5)Overall Score: I give this trailer a solid 9/10. Had it not been for the fact that there were aspects only fans of the book would understand it would have got 10/10. However like I said that was only a minor grievance and what they did show was enough to get someone who was already a fan hyped up in anticipation of the release, hopefully Catching Fire will be as well received by the critics and the public as it's predecessor was!
That is all for today! As usual I hoped you enjoyed this post and I shall see you all on Friday!

I feel like the only female in the world that didn't like the first film! I have to admit though, this one looks pretty good! X
ReplyDeleteHaha! I can understand that, when you think about it it's actually a little strange that it appeals to so many girls, with it's subject matter! x
